By its third year Book Week had developed from an event for people interested in specific authors to an appreciation of writing generally.

The now established team of Neville, Jan, Hannah and Rob introduced a short-story writing competition for Bewdley schools. Another innovation was Film of the Book Night in which a screening of the film Labor Day at St. George’s Hall (part of the weekly Cinema in the Hall programme) was followed by a discussion of the book, by Joyce Maynard, on which it was based. These two elements became Book Week staples.

The music-themed evening, this time featuring internationally renowned bass-guitarist Mo Foster, and a Saturday afternoon event featuring bestselling food-writer Mary Anne Boermans both received enthusiastic receptions from sell-out audiences.
