The speaker events were already outgrowing the cramped library space by the second year and most now switched to the side rooms in St George’s Hall.

One of the speakers from the first year, local novelist Rob Ireland, was recruited into the organising team. Two new elements were introduced that subsequently featured in all future Book Week programmes: writer visits to local schools and a finalé Literary Quiz Dinner at The Hop Pole Inn.

The second year also saw the introduction of an evening dedicated to poetry and a music-themed event when Deke Leonard (founder member of Welsh band Man) wowed an appreciative sell-out audience with anecdotes from his career.
